We were in a lady’s home recently advising on such a changeover and boxes of clothing were being packed and portable clothes rails, such as the type used in film and theatre were being racked with her luxury ski clothes, winter festivities and such. These were then wheeled out into her clothes storage room. Even if you do not have help the process should be the same and the maintenance of clothing vis a vis shape, temperature, humidity, and airflow are vital as is the very important anti moth protection which we know is vital.

We are delighted to be working with Total Wardrobe Care (their link) and wanted to bring you a range of products to make your luxury bedroom and wardrobe give you the feel of being in a luxury hotel whilst Total Wardrobe Care’s products are beautifully presented and smell divine giving a definite touch of the boudoir.

So how should we store our clothes?

It’s so important to keep your wardrobe, clothing storage and home organised and well kept. Organising and sorting your clothing is imperative in looking after your luxury style and maintaining your luxury wardrobe which no doubt is also an expensive wardrobe, so this is all financially prudent.

It will also help deter moths away from your clothes and home, in order for your possessions to stay intact and in the best condition they can be, for much longer.

The big turnout – Use the end of the season to have a cull. Go through it yourself or have your maid do it. Your winter woollies, suits coats and dresses, are you sure you want to see them all next October?! Be ruthless. When was the last time you wore it?

Clean all your garments – Two options: wash and/or dry-clean. Make sure any garments to be stored away for the season are clean. Stains oxidise and moths love hair, skin and food particles, do not feed them! Please feel free to contact us for our recommendations.

Spring clean your luxury wardrobe – Light some candles throw the windows open and take everything out of your wardrobe and wash, dust and vacuum. The natural anti-moth linen spray which can also be used as a sumptuous room fragrance has been specially formulated to protect your garments from moths and keep your wardrobes fresh.

Protect from moths – Refresh out of date anti-moth products, throw them away if they have been in the wardrobe more than six months and replace your sachets. Use a pheromone moth trap in each room (low down, away from windows and your clothes)  replacing the strips every three months, which catches the boys and the moth decoy (placed five metres from each trap) which stops the mating game!

Repairs and maintenance – If any buttons have fallen off, zips have broken, hems have fallen down or clothes have grown too big or too small, take them to be altered and repaired. Don’t leave anything in the wardrobe that needs something doing to it, chances are it will not be worn.

Storage – Pack clothes away in a breathable bag or box, in acid-free tissue. Don’t leave in plastic or exposed to sunlight. My mother who worked at Peter Jones in the 1950’s and was a model always used acid free tissue paper for packing clothes and keep clothes, hats, luxury handbags and ladies’ shoes in shape.

If you look at how royalty or aristocracy or the Hollywood greats had and have their suitcase packed by their luxury maid you will see acid free tissue paper is always used interlayered between garments, and scrunched to create shape and fill gaps, a total must for luxury clothes care.

Hangers – Get the right hangers for the job. The correct shape, the correct material and of course appearance. Please contact us for more information on which ones to use for your luxury wardrobe care.

Shoes, boots, handbags, hats and luggage – Of course a massive area and something that needs to be maintained by your luxury maid or yourself or again you can contact Gentlemans Butler. It’s a subject we will return to.

Style – Employ the services of a stylist to update your existing wardrobe. A fresh eye will put different items together for a fresh look. This is service Gentlemans Butler offers working with a lady who styles and dresses international celebrities, aristocracy and royalty.
