London’s Arts Launches
The arts launches we cover often relate to beauty, fashion, style and travel. From galleries and films to books and museums. Such as The Glamour of Italian Fashion at The V & A or The First Georgians at the Queen’s Gallery.
Brief Encounter, A British film of enduring love. https://www.criterion.com/films/345-brief-encounter The BFI’s 70th anniversary reissued classic Brief Encounter. Brief Encounter has been a firm favourite in my household for years, first on TV, then video, now DVD, but has always been seen on the small screen. So when the opportunity came up to see this 1940s classic, up close and personal, I packed my country basket, stepped onto a train and chugged my excited, marital way up to the big smoke – a fitting start I thought. Meeting a friend, a fellow Encounter devotee, at the cinema doors we armed ourselves…
FASHION AND VERSAILLES, by Laurence Benaïm..extravagance, decadence and frivolity qualities of sexuality, beauty, sophistication and elegance are things you need at the forfront of your mind when looking at style. A stunning illustrated coffee table book with a foreword by Catherine Pégard is something to peruse at your leisure …. The palace of Versailles – a hub of power and seduction, and the most legendary royal residence of all – is undisputedly the birthplace of fashion, for both men and women. The world’s first dress codes were established at Versailles under Louis XIV. Entwined with the whims and humours of…
The Shining was screened across 100 UK cinemas to celebrate Halloween. Audiences can enjoy this remarkable thriller on the big screen once again at cinemas throughout the UK. The Shining When Jack Torrance, played by Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson, lands the job of overwintering the remote Overlook Hotel he, his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) have no idea the horrors that are to come. At his interview he’s told of…
Gentlemans Butler is partnering with The BFI for the Jean-Pierre Melville, Visions of the Underworld film season. To live an enriched life it is healthy to go into unknown, but with more than a hint of that you will like it. Given that he is greatly admired by Tarantino (among many others), Melville’s movies are mostly immediately recognisable as his: they depict a distinctly ‘Melvillian’ universe in a distinctly ‘Melvillian’ way. Gentlemans Butler certainly concurs with his viewpoint. Part Two (September) “[Le Samouraï] is masterful in its control of acting and visual style”Roger Ebert With the sole exception of L’Armée…
Taxi Driver returns to the cinema after 40 years in 2017 with a 4K restoration. This was done with guidance from its director Martin Scorsese and cinematographer Michael Chapman, and the reissue of the film is one of the highlights of the BFI Martin Scorsese season, running through January and February. I was lucky enough to see this in the wonderfully sumptuous surroundings of the cinema room at Soho House, so much thanks to them and all at Park Circus. See films at the BFI For those unfamiliar with the film, a youthful Robert DeNiro plays ex-Vietnam vet and insomniac,…
