THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Running Time: 117 minutes

Certificate: 12A

IN CINEMAS FRIDAY 14th AUGUST 2015
I think the main thing to determine is why you are going to the cinema.
Either you cannot stand another night on your own, the pubs no longer want to know you, nor you them, your friends think you are rather odd or perhaps you have just flown back from a training mission in Havana.
Personally I opt for the latter.

In some ways I think it’s often better not to compare new with old but in case you need re-educating the original “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” was an American television series broadcast on NBC from 1964, to 1968.
As I was born in 1967, the year of flower power where The House of The Rising Sun was number one so I remember 1968 very well.
The story followed secret agents, played by Robert Vaughn and David McCallum, who worked for a secret international counter espionage and law-enforcement agency called U.N.C.L.E.

Now some nearly fifty years later my tailor is still is business and the style of Guy Ritchie’s film is very much en vogue. Savile Row I think will be doing good business.

I liked the film, because it was super stylish, well filmed with some lovely dry wit.
Those bond aficionados will I am sure notice the use of sarcasm, beautiful ladies, a masochist leaning, cold war stereotypes and a good dose of violence, though fairly tongue in cheek.
I think its joy will be stronger on the big screen and would not necessarily place money it will still be at the top in 50 years but I recommend you go with your sweetheart and maybe pretend you arrived in your e-type rather than on the number 47 bus.

The ingredients are stars by the name of Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, and British National Treasure HUGH GRANT.
The Style is very much so ‘60s, from the glamorous fashion, to the cars, the dazzling interiors, and the stunning Rome/Italian Riviera locations.

The plot…….

Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.

Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

“The Man from U.N.C.L.E” also stars Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby”), with Jared Harris (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”), and Hugh Grant as Waverly.

The screenplay was written by Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, who previously collaborated on re-imagining the classic detective Sherlock Holmes in two hit films.
