As with many aspects of luxury lifestyle one wants to create a system, that works and one undertakes on a regular basis.
You might hear ladies having a regular booking for a manicure and pedicure and we believe gentlemen are no different. As you get older it’s not quite as easy to look after our feet and a pedicure is such a lovely relaxing experience anyway and especially if your job is high profile a gentleman needs well-groomed hands just as much as a lady.
To this end the concept of fitting your manicure and pedicure around your hair visits always seemed a good one.
This is what we did. We booked in for a manicure & pedicure, which take place at the same time, upstairs in the salon and then a hair appointment afterwards. Thus leaving well groomed, smart and well kept.
As you enter Harrods, ask for directions for Urban Retreat and take the escalator up to the fifth floor where there is also a lovely place to have a tea and coffee.
Many gentlemen visit Urban Retreat from all over the world so do not feel you will be on your own. Once you have been booked in at the large reception counter by one of several book in ladies you will be directed or escorted upstairs for your nail appointment.
Upstairs was nicely busy without being heaving. Hot chocolate brought and then taken and sat in the pedicure thrown. Jacket hung up next to you, and once sat in a shelf comes across for you to put your drinks on, phone, ipad, magazine and so the manicurist can easily and professionally get to grooming your nails.
The immaculate manicure is lovely as you have your hands in heated mits which really lets the cream sink into the skin and both hands and feet are scrubbed, nails filed, cuticles cared for and skin massaged. In addition men have the option of either the nails being buffed or a clear or pale colour applied. I usually have a clear polish on the hands and a very pale pink on the toes which just means your nails look healthy and alive. In addition a nail strengthener is also applied.
Zena from Lebanon was looking after my hands and Milly from Bulgaria my feet. Both were super friendly and I was made to feel welcome without too much fuss and during the treatment we got to have a good chat.
I must mention Zena for the attention she gave post treatment. In my life I have had many pedicures and manicures and have noticed many good and some not so good practices. Zena got extra brownie points for two things. Firstly I have a clear nail polish on both my hands and feet and one needs to have this checked before getting up to make sure this is dry. I regularly have trouble getting people’s attention for this but she attended to this perfectly and so did she do something that I think has only happened once before, but wish it was a regularly part of having a pedicure in that she came to put my socks and shoes on plus tying my laces, so I could just get up, put my jacket on and leave. Small details but they make a big difference and ones notices these things.
Afterwards I headed into the hair salon where Andre was going to give my hair a shave (I have very short hair)
I often ask for a hair/scalp treatment as this can be overlooked with men with receding hairlines but it’s very important to feed the scalp – Andre gave me a shampoo using Rahua, from the rainforest and a Moroccan oil masque. Not only did this feel great but I could really feel the difference the next day.
I have been visiting Urban Retreat for around 10 years now and I think it was my best visit.
