In the very heart of Mayfair, think class, distinction, excellence and charm.
Emil Bruno Meyrowitz, born on the 20th October 1852 in Greifenhagen, Prussia, was the founder of the brand. E.B. Meyrowitz. Stores were opened in London, Paris and New York over the course of the next twenty years retailing not only spectacles but all manner of optical goods, devices and instruments.
A brand who played a key role in the early days of aviation, motor racing and mountaineering sounds just spot on as Gentlemans Butler’s official purveyor of luxury optical goods. Simply superb luxury opticians.

Drawing on its rich history of traditional craftsmanship and exquisite design the atelier visions and realises collections of frames stooped in timeless elegance and style. The boutique, exuding both a welcoming air and intimate atmosphere allows clients the freedom to browse current collections in a relaxed setting whilst also discuss their ocular needs to the most minute detail.
“I love the word ocular” James Bond mentions his oculist in the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (1969) is the sixth spy film in the James Bond series, based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Ian Fleming.

“The expertise of the atelier lies not only in the design and craft of the frame but also in its long-standing ability to create unique pieces tailored to every detail of one’s face shape, hair style, profile as well as even career or hobby.”
Patrons may choose from a myriad of materials ranging from cotton based acetates, naturally sourced buffalo horn, precious metals and fine jewels as well as exotic skins, Pleistocene mammoth ivory and tortoiseshell.

The word class I think can be misconstrued sometimes. In my book is has everything to do with distinction and very little to do with money. You could describe one of the poorest members of society as having class more so than maybe one of the millionaires just because the values the hold are sacred.
To me class is one of the most important words professionally and personally.
I value good old fashioned service where I can hear an unbiased opinion on what needs to be done.
These to me are values my mother handed down to me, values I try my very best to uphold to and are factors at the forefront of why Gentlemans Butler was created in the first place. They are unquestionably values I could see in E.B. Meyrowitz and why I would say they are one of the best brands I have ever come in to contact with. This is not sales patter or PR spin but the result of my experience of being looked after and supplied with wonderful spectacles that feel good, work well, and are complemented on by many. I feel entrusted to their knowledge and their opinion, which is exactly what I believe refined ladies and gentlemen are after.
It is also one of the oldest service codes of conduct which in many ways works even better today in that if you walk into a shop and ask for a new tap, and after a quick chat the sales person tells you do not need a new tap, just a widget costing 50 pence, you are probably so bowled over there are still honest people out there but equally this person and company will sit in your mind and when in the future you really do need a new tap or something related, they will be first on your list to talk with.

Though I had been given glasses many years ago or should I say spectacles, as I think this word adds a little drama to the tale. I thought that my eyes needed more correction than they used to.
The modern world to a gentleman, an English one, that being played by myself can seem a most auspicious place, full of buy two get one free and choice amongst choice, and people telling you this and people telling you that …. and I heard on the wireless the other day that they could be bringing in Robots to care for the elderly…. What a fantastic idea I thought, naaat to give a bit of Brooklyn yaal to the conversation! as this is exactly what they do not need. They need a person with emotion, feeling and an opinion, character traits that I was exactly looking for when I was looking for a new optician. As in the movies the opticians I last used are no longer and the names I knew as names of substance and knowledge are also no longer, for ultimately what I or indeed any other Gentleman of distinction is looking for is simplicity. I do not want to be attacked by multiple forms, stickers or scientific jargon, but I do want to converse with an expert, who will care for me, look after me and understand the niceties that will result in the best result, so I leave content, uplifted and my life improved.
I came across E.B. Meyrowitz looking for luxury opticians. Drawn to their website of the time that offered simplicity and distinction. In addition the fact their name dates back over one hundred years, and also sounds like an optician should, and the fact they are based on such an arcade “6 The Royal Arcade”, an arcade in one of London’s prestigious shopping destinations gave me a good dose of confidence that they were an opticians suitable for a Gentleman.

Like in Mr Ben I wonder what I would come out the other side. A little over dramatic you might think, well maybe but the thought of having to wear glasses on a daily basis was met with some trepidation. Firstly there is one’s own feeling of mortality in that OH I am not as flight of foot as I was when I was 18….. mmmm oh I am getting older mmmm OH yes …… mmmm not sure I like that. So initially one needs to deal with the medical matter, an important one nonetheless but one wants to have someone with a sympathetic ear. This all happens downstairs at …6 The Royal Arcade by a wonderful qualified optician, who will give you a thorough check and assess your current lens prescription, so I took my old glasses in, where they have a machine that can detail the lens strength, very clever I thought, looking on like a young boy intrigued by a new machine.
All forms of medical care, it is my belief should be holistic in the way it is handled, proactively but also with a tender ear.
That all being taken care for, my lens strength had increased a little but not quite as much as I feared and was informed that I should wear my glasses when I feel the need, which for me is sometimes the television, the theatre, cinema, driving and in general long distance.

Bifocals, Varifocals, lens coatings and all the other paraphernalia of options needed will be discussed. A family run business, expect to be mothered to a degree. For me this is really what I want, not in a patronising way but yes I want to be cared for and looked after and I want to hear the expert’s opinion. It also gives me the clear feeling, getting it right is very important to them.
For me probably the largest consideration is what they look like, but in many ways just as much from the perspective of how the glasses make me feel about myself as suddenly my visage, my image was going to change, well certainly for the time I would be wearing them so this is a big deal, well certainly to me it was.

Being under Sheel’s wings so to speak is really like going on a journey and it is here that one gets a very clear understanding of why the great, good and distinguished make their merry way to E.B. Meyrowitz shop door, because it’s now time to understand something of the art, physiology and also psychology looking at the shape of ones face, the features of the face, and the relative sizes. Sheel said to me afterwards that she knew instantly what type of frame would suite me best, but she wanted me to decide for myself. My face she said is full of ovals and so a square frame really would not work.
You can buy their frames they have already made or they can handmake to your exact requirements.
Then there is what I refer to as “The Theatre of glasses”. I for example knew a senior school master that at some specific moment would remove his glasses and twist them to give dramatic punctuation or get someone’s attention and all of us will have seen a movie where someone eminent takes off their glasses, usually with the movement from them looking down at a script or piece of paper to taking their gaze on a person.

With my background working in the film and television world I found myself in an interesting position the other day, wanting my glasses on to see to the other end of the studio but the next moment wanting to looking down at the script…… This conversation brought up another that of varifocals and bifocals….
All of this to those who have worn glasses for a long time may say, well that’s obvious but to myself not and naturally it brought up a question I wanted to put to Sheel, which I did.
Indeed I had had this conversation with both Sheel and their optician prior to the glasses being made, but to be honest, as I had not faced that dilemma before well not in a position to fully understand anyway. All of us were in agreement that rarely in life can we have everything, a one size fits all, an eradicator of the problem as in nearly all cases this means compromise and instead of doing two things very well and separately you end up with one product handling requirements half as well.

As a vain male….. what you mean we look at ourselves in the mirror…… and love it when we are told we look handsome ….. oh never ever……. I was a bit little a kid with a new toy…. wearing my new glasses ….. because they did look super cool….. and it’s a bit like being the new you or should I say the new me.
I love them, they do take getting used to but unquestionably E.B. Meyrowitz are not only supreme opticians but genuinely top class ateliers in the art of my new friend, my spectacles.
I look forward to having a long association.
Here is a little recap:
