The Playboy Club, London clubs: Cocktails, Dinner & Playboy Bunnies – www.gentlemansbutler.com

London town, Mayfair, cocktails, a beautiful lady, Playboy bunnies and it’s my birthday. It all takes you back to London in the swinging 60’s. Playboy is one of those great American institutions and the story of Playboy is real insight into American culture. For many years there had not been a Playboy club in London but earlier on this year they reopened at 14 Old Park Lane. Housed in a what looks like a 60’s building you are surrounded by the great London hotels.

Greated by suited doorman we were escorted into Salvatore’s, the cocktail bar named after renowned mixologist and cocktail expert Salvatore Calabrese who has personally researched the history of traditional cocktails from as far back as the 16th  century.

We arrived quite early so the bar was relaxed but friendly. I was particularly impressed by the knowledgeable barman. From an interiors perspective the look embodies the history of Playboy with a mixture of Arabian and some inspiration from the 60’s.

After a relaxing drink we moved onto the restaurant upstairs which also houses the casino, the smoking room, Gentlemans Tonic and another bar. The restaurant area is furnished in what may be termed modern dining.

We both had seafood starters which were excellent, tasty and well presented.

The main course had to be the specially raised beef “Wagyu NY Strip” with a mixture of side dishes. Though highly original they differ quite a lot from standard British taste, which is just to say expect it creamy. Finally onto an desert which was straight out of the film “Grease” American Cheese Cake and Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae.

Next to us were some business clients and Arabic gentlemen, all of whom seemed to be both friendly and at ease as it was home from home for them.

Arrived about 9pm, left just before 2am at which time The Cottontail Lounge was alive with people dancing. What I really liked about my evening was that it was different, in a good way, to many other evenings on offer in London and to leave well fed, relaxed and happy must be a good thing,

Fine Dining in London: JW Steakhouse – www.gentlemansbutler.com

Why do you go for dinner, special occasion, meeting friends, business meeting, girlie lunch, boys night…..Whatever the reason it is good to have choice and in many ways The JW Steakhouse is the classic meeting of two great nations Great Britain and the USA.

I recently visited Grosvenor House, A JW Marriott Hotel, located on London’s Park Lane in the heart of Mayfair. Interestingly I have a family connection, as I believe my god father was the hotel manager probably back in the 1970’s. Though it first opened in 1929, the hotel has been a frequent home to royalty, and other distinguished guests, so I fit in perfectly ! Renovated in 2009 it is spacious, very central and in my opinion a perfect place for a business meeting, meeting an old friend and certainly excellent for anyone who likes a hearty meal.

I am not sure I know a gentleman who does not like a good steak and I am no exception.

I arrived at 8 for Dinner and was greeted by a friendly welcome, and whilst waiting for my friend to arrive sat and had a drink in The Bourbon Bar.

The décor certainly reminds me of the US, tall ceilings, plenty of room, smart but casual and very easy going, a perfect environment to have a catch up and a good conversation.

We plumbed for a three couse meal, crab soups & crab cakes, 2 different Steaks, Aberdeen Angus, and myself the signature steak, a dramatic 32 ounce, on-the-bone rib eye aptly named ‘The Tomahawk.’, certainly good for any aspiring Rugby player.

I asked for a recommendation on the wine and was not disappointed as the red, matched perfectly with my steak.

Afterwards we shared a cheesecake, coffee and sat and talked with no feeling of time.

Having probably been sat for just over 3 hours we left at just past midnight, dropping into their red bar for a cheeky cocktail then home, one of us heading north and the other south.

If you are looking for smart and friendly with solid tasty food where you can talk and relax then this is for you. Perfect to take any American friends or clients who are missing home or for American events such as Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
